Meet the Founder
Tyler Lott Johnston BA MSc
Founder and Director
An experienced building conservator and traditional building surveyor with extensive international, cross-sector experience, Tyler has worked on everything from multi-billion pound developments to humble, neglected dwellings. While she has extensive experience in building conservation, project management, and executive leadership in the private and charitable sector, she’s not afraid of getting her hands dirty on a project.
In autumn 2024, Tyler joined the Engineering and Environment team at the University of Northumbria as a PhD researcher, examining the technical and economic development of innovative bio-based construction materials. Her research examines the opportunities of bio-based building lime in wider-scale construction and complements her dedication to the advancement of the use of traditional building materials in a wider, more sustainable, and low-carbon future.
She remains active in the built environment, serving in various roles, including service as charitable trustee for the past twenty years. In her most recent roles, she is proud to serve as Trustee and Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees for The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), Trustee and Interim Chair of the Board of Trustees for Build Environment Forum Scotland (BEFS), and Chair of The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) in Scotland. She also serves as an advocate for traditional building skills and a mentor for women, underrepresented, and young people looking to join the sector.
Tyler holds professional memberships in the IHBC and ICON.
In previous roles, Tyler also served as Convener of the Edinburgh Traditional Building Forum, Host of the Scottish Traditional Building Festival (a part of Edinburgh Fringe), and Manager of the Building Limes Forum, amongst others.
